What this VAT calculator does

Enter an amount, choose a country or type your own rate, and decide whether to add VAT to a price or take it out of a total. The calculator shows the VAT rate used, the amount without VAT, the VAT itself and the amount with VAT. Ready-made standard rates cover Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan, Morocco, the UK, Germany and France.

How to use it

  1. Type the amount.
  2. Choose the country, or pick custom rate and type a percentage.
  3. Choose Add VAT if the amount excludes VAT, or Remove VAT if it already includes VAT.
  4. Read the net amount, the VAT and the total.

Formulas

Example: at Egypt’s 14%, adding VAT to 1,000 gives 140 VAT and a total of 1,140. Removing VAT from 1,150 at Saudi Arabia’s 15% gives a net amount of 1,000 and VAT of 150.

Rates and sources

The standard rates come from a dated data file in this site, with a link to each country’s tax authority, for example the Egyptian Tax Authority (eta.gov.eg) and ZATCA in Saudi Arabia (zatca.gov.sa). Reduced rates, exemptions and zero-rated goods are not included. This is a calculation aid, not tax advice, so confirm the rate with the tax authority or an accountant. Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in Egypt?

The standard VAT rate in Egypt is 14%. Some goods and services are exempt or taxed at other rates, so check the Egyptian Tax Authority for your product.

What is the difference between adding and removing VAT?

Add VAT when your price excludes tax and you want the total. Remove VAT when the price you have already includes tax and you want the net price and the tax amount.

Why does removing 14% VAT not just subtract 14%?

VAT is calculated on the net price, so the gross price is net × 1.14. To get back to the net price you divide by 1.14. For 114 that gives 100, not 98.04.

How current are the country rates?

Rates are stored in a dated data file (see the date below) and link to official sources. Governments change rates occasionally, so confirm the current rate before you invoice or file.
