What this discount calculator does
Enter a price and a percentage discount and the calculator shows the price after discount, the amount you save and the total discount. There is also an optional second discount for stacked offers, such as a sale price plus a coupon. It is useful for shopping, comparing offers and checking that a sale is really as good as it sounds.
How to use it
- Type the original price.
- Type the discount percentage.
- If there is a second discount, add it in the extra discount box. This box is optional.
- Read the final price and how much you save.
Formula
Price after discount = original price × (1 − first discount ÷ 100) × (1 − second discount ÷ 100).
Amount saved = original price − final price. Total discount = amount saved ÷ original price × 100.
Example: a 100 item with 20% off and then a further 10% off costs 100 × 0.8 × 0.9 = 72. You save 28, which is a total discount of 28%.
Tips
Compare offers using the final price, not only the percentage, because a bigger percentage on a higher starting price can still cost more. The tool does not add shipping or tax. It uses neutral numbers with two decimals, so it works for any currency. This is for illustration only and is not financial advice. Your numbers stay in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a price after a discount?
Multiply the price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A 25% discount on 200 gives 200 × 0.75 = 150, so you save 50.
Why is 20% plus 10% not the same as 30% off?
Successive discounts apply one after the other. 20% off 100 gives 80, and 10% off 80 gives 72, which is a total of 28% off, not 30%.
Can I use this to work out the original price?
This calculator goes from original price to sale price. To go backwards, divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example 150 at 25% off came from 200.
Does the calculator include tax?
No. Prices are used exactly as entered. If tax applies after the discount, use the VAT calculator on the final price.
