About this Snake game
Snake is one of the most famous games ever made. You control a snake on a square board. It moves constantly, and you steer it to eat the red food. Each time it eats, the snake grows longer and you score a point. The longer you get, the harder it is to avoid your own body. This version runs in your browser with no download.
How to play
- Press Start, or press any arrow key to begin.
- Steer with the arrow keys or W, A, S, D, by swiping on the board, or with the arrow buttons.
- Eat the red food to grow and score. Each piece of food is worth one point.
- Avoid the walls and your own tail. Press Space or the pause button to pause.
- When the game ends, press Play again.
Tips to survive longer
- Plan one or two moves ahead instead of reacting at the last moment.
- Stay away from the edges early on, because they leave you less room to turn.
- When you are long, move in wide, steady loops and keep a path to your tail.
- Use short pauses to think. The game also pauses automatically when you switch to another tab.
Good to know
The board is a 20 by 20 grid and the speed is constant, so your score depends on planning rather than reflexes alone. The snake may move into the cell its tail has just left. The game runs fully in your browser with no sign-up, and the on-screen buttons make it playable on touch screens.
Frequently asked questions
How do I control the snake?
Use the arrow keys or W, A, S, D. On a phone, swipe on the board or tap the arrow buttons. The snake keeps moving by itself, and you only choose its direction.
What ends the game?
The game ends when the snake runs into a wall or into its own body. If you ever fill the whole board, you win.
Why can't I turn straight back?
The snake cannot reverse into itself. A turn directly backwards is ignored, so you have to turn sideways first.
Is my best score saved?
Yes, in your own browser on this device. It is never sent anywhere, and clearing your browser data removes it.
