What this tool does
This tool cleans up messy spacing in a few clicks. It collapses repeated spaces and tabs, trims spaces from the start and end of each line, shortens long runs of blank lines, and can join everything into one line. It is useful for tidying text pasted from PDFs and emails, preparing data for spreadsheets and cleaning up copy before publishing.
How to use it
- Paste your text into the first box.
- Leave the cleaning options you want ticked. The first three are on by default.
- Copy the cleaned text from the result box. The counters show how many characters were removed.
The options
- Collapse repeated spaces and tabs: replaces runs of spaces, tabs and no-break spaces with one space.
- Trim spaces at the start and end of each line: removes leading and trailing spaces on every line.
- Reduce several blank lines to one: keeps a single blank line between paragraphs.
- Remove line breaks: joins all lines into one line, separated by single spaces.
Example: “Hello world “ followed by two blank lines and “Next paragraph” becomes “Hello world”, one blank line and “Next paragraph”.
Notes
The tool changes spacing only. Words, letters, numbers and punctuation are never edited, so it is safe for Arabic and mixed-language text. It treats invisible no-break spaces, which often hide in copied text, the same as normal spaces. For counting words or characters afterwards, use the word counter. Your text stays in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as an extra space?
Two or more spaces, tabs or no-break spaces in a row. The tool replaces each run with a single normal space, and can also trim the edges of each line.
Can it remove line breaks?
Yes. Tick "Remove line breaks" and the text is joined into one line, with a single space between the former lines.
Does it work on Arabic text?
Yes. It works on any language. Arabic words, diacritics and punctuation are kept exactly as they are, and only the spacing is changed.
Where do extra spaces come from?
Often from copying text out of PDFs, web pages, emails or chat apps, or from typing double spaces after full stops. They can cause problems in forms, spreadsheets and code.
