What this word counter does
Paste or type any text and the tool shows the number of words, characters, characters without spaces and lines, updating as you type. It understands English and Arabic, including text that mixes both. Arabic diacritics (tashkeel) and the decorative stretching letter (tatweel) are not counted as characters, so a fully vowelled word counts the same as the plain one.
How to use it
- Click the box and type, or paste your text.
- Read the results under the box. They change as you type.
- Delete the text to start again.
How each number is calculated
- Words are groups of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks.
- Characters counts every visible letter, digit, space and symbol. An emoji counts as one character.
- Characters (no spaces) leaves out all spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- Lines counts line breaks. A paragraph typed without pressing Enter is one line, however long it wraps on screen.
Example: “Hello big world” has 3 words, 15 characters and 13 characters without spaces. The Arabic phrase “مَرْحَبًا بِالعَالَمِ” has 2 words, and its diacritics are not counted.
When a count matters
Social networks, SMS and form fields usually limit text by characters, while essays, articles and translations are measured in words. Check which count your limit uses and leave a small margin, because some platforms count line breaks or links differently. Writers can also use the count to track progress against a target length.
Your text stays on your device. The tool runs entirely in the browser and works offline once the page has loaded.
Frequently asked questions
Does the word counter work with Arabic text?
Yes. Words are separated by spaces, so Arabic, English and mixed text are all counted correctly. Arabic diacritics (tashkeel) and tatweel are not counted as characters.
Why does the character count differ from other tools?
Tools disagree about emoji, diacritics and line breaks. Here every visible letter, digit, space and symbol counts once, emoji count as one character, and Arabic diacritics are ignored.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser. Nothing you type or paste is sent to our servers.
How many words is a page?
A typical single-spaced page holds about 500 words and a double-spaced page about 250, but it depends on font size and margins.
