What this length converter does
Choose a value, a unit to convert from and a unit to convert to, and the result appears instantly. The converter handles metric units (millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres), imperial and US units (inches, feet, yards, miles) and nautical miles. It is useful for height, room and furniture sizes, travel distances, sewing, DIY, school work and shopping from abroad.
How to use it
- Type the value you want to convert.
- Choose the unit in the From list.
- Choose the unit in the To list.
- Read the result. It updates as you change anything.
How the conversion works
Every unit is defined by its exact size in metres. The tool converts your value to metres and then to the unit you chose:
result = value × (metres in the From unit) ÷ (metres in the To unit)
The exact sizes used are: 1 inch = 0.0254 m, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 yard = 0.9144 m, 1 mile = 1,609.344 m and 1 nautical mile = 1,852 m.
Example: 100 feet = 100 × 0.3048 = 30.48 metres. And 10 centimetres = 10 × 0.01 ÷ 0.0254 = 3.937 inches.
Tips
You can type numbers with Arabic-Indic digits or a decimal comma. Very large or very small answers are shown in scientific notation. For a person’s height in feet and inches, convert to centimetres first, or try the BMI calculator, which accepts feet and inches directly. Your numbers stay in your browser.
