Text to Binary Converter

What this tool does

This text to binary converter turns any text into binary code, and turns binary code back into text. It is handy for learning how computers store text, for puzzles and school assignments, and for checking how a character is encoded. It supports English, Arabic and emoji through UTF-8.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text, or your binary digits, in the first box.
  2. Choose Text → binary or Binary → text.
  3. Copy the result. Binary output is written in groups of eight digits separated by spaces.

How the conversion works

The tool first encodes your text as UTF-8 bytes. Every byte is a number from 0 to 255, and each is written as exactly eight binary digits, padding with zeros on the left. To decode, it reads the digits in groups of eight, turns each group back into a byte and decodes the bytes as UTF-8.

Example: “Hi” becomes 01001000 01101001, because H is 72 and i is 105. The Arabic letter م becomes 11011001 10000101, which is two bytes.

Notes

Binary here means the UTF-8 bytes of your text, not a different numbering for each language. Characters outside basic English need more than eight digits, which is why the output can look longer than expected. If you paste something that is not made of 0 and 1, or the digits do not divide into groups of eight, the tool shows an error. Your text stays in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How does text become binary?

Each character is converted to its UTF-8 bytes, and each byte is written as eight binary digits (bits). The letter A is the byte 65, which is 01000001 in binary.

Why do Arabic letters give 16 bits each?

In UTF-8, Arabic letters use two bytes, so each letter becomes two groups of eight bits. Basic English letters use one byte, and emoji use four.

Do I need spaces between the groups when decoding?

No. Spaces are optional. The decoder removes them and reads the digits in groups of eight, so the total number of digits must be a multiple of eight.

Can I decode any binary into text?

Only if the bytes form valid UTF-8 text. Binary from an image or program will usually decode to nothing readable, and the tool will say so.
